I went looking and found a really good Gingersnaps recipe in one of the old cookbooks that we picked up at the Old Mill Antique Mall earlier this month. The cookbook is called , "Enjoy Good Eating Every Day The Easy Spry Way" with "Aunt Jenny" copyright 1949 - Lever Brothers Company - Cambridge Mass.
GINGERSNAPS
1/2 cup Spry (Crisco is what I use - shortening)
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ginger
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg, unbeaten
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
Combine Spry, salt. ginger, sugar. molasses, and egg and beat well. Sift flour and soda together and add to Spry mixture and mix well.... Drop from tablespoon on Sprycoated baking sheets. Flatten cookies by stamping with a flat-bottomed glass covered with a damp cloth ( I use a flat bottomed glass smeared with some shortening and dipped in sugar to flatten cookies)..... Bake in a moderate oven (350*F) 12-15 minutes.... Makes 3 dozen.
