We have a new housing development going in right behind our neighborhood and this evening we went to check it out. The houses are all laid out pretty much the same and "look" rich but when you examine the interiors you see where they are cutting costs... cheap fixtures, windows and such.
They're adding lots of fancy details to hind their short cuts.
THEN.... look at all the dumpsters in these photos. Every house has one or two sitting in front of it and when you peer inside it will make you heart sick! SO MUCH WASTE!
These homes are selling at nearly $200,000 and up! The lots are the size of postage stamps and there are no mature trees. It always kills me how they cut and bulldoze all the trees and remove the topsoil; build a house and then plant new trees that will take years to mature and the grass will usually die because it's being planted into soil with no nutrients.
CRAZY!
They put brick on the fronts only to make it look more expensive and then wrap the rest of the house in vinyl siding. CRINGE!
Scott couldn't stand it and had to fish two partial rolls of black roofing felt out of two of the dumpsters. In one dumpster he saw an entire roll at the back of the dumpster that had never been opened!
Just look....
There were probably enough 2x4's in these two dumpsters alone to build our two dogs some mighty fine dog houses not to mention the plywood! We would probably get arrested if we backed the truck up to one of these and just started loading it up. SUCH WASTE!
And then there was this gem....

Hello to all those that have followed this blog for some time. I have not posted in quite awhile so thought I would pop over and write some...
Oh my goodness!! That's terrible! Over here in NZ its quite often you will see a sign saying free wood when someone is building and you can just help yourself to the building waste and recycle it. With everything in the dumpsters in your pictures we could make so many projects around here that we want to make but are saving up to get the supplies for. Have you thought about speaking to a couple of the workers on site to see who is in charge of the bins and see if they would mind if you took some of it for some home projects? Regards, Ruth
ReplyDeleteGood idea Ruth, about asking if it's ok to take stuff from the skip. here in Australia, houses like those would cost anywhere from the mid $400K up to $600K and like you noticed, the fittings and finishes are poor quality. :-(
ReplyDeleteIt just saddens me to see waste on such a large scale. I could so use some of that "trash".
ReplyDeleteI hate cookie cutter homes. Looks like the Centex neighborhood we lived in back in NC. Cheap = falling apart in the first 6 months. We and all our neighbors had problems. Our house had bowed siding, falling soffits, and crooked floors. Our neighbors all had much worse problems. No trees = no wildlife. There is no privacy in these neighborhoods.
ReplyDeleteI still keep in touch and now there are section 8 tenants and mostly the homes are rented because no one can sell them. The houses are under 8 years old and the neighborhood went downhill that fast. All our neighbors, and I mean ALL, wanted to move out within 1 year of living there.
Blech. Give me a house in the country any day. Too bad I can't afford one.
We went to Lowes today and I saw a new subdivision going in and thought the same thing. How these families could live on top of each other really bothered me. Second I thought how will they ever fill all those homes.
ReplyDeleteYour dumpster photos sicken me! Just think of all the tress that were sacrificed to end up in a dump!!!
I watch as new houses or subdivisions go up everywhere. I can understand the need to live in a nice new house as you know I did it but there is ways to much waste there. It is probably sitting on good farmland too. Well that is what is happening here. B
